PAT Testing Checklist: What to Prepare for Your Visit

Being well prepared for a PAT testing visit makes the process faster, more thorough, and less disruptive. Use this checklist to ensure nothing is missed.

A little preparation before your PAT testing visit can make a significant difference to how quickly and smoothly the process runs. Use this checklist to ensure everything is in order before our engineers arrive.

Before the Visit: Preparation Checklist

  • Create or update your appliance inventory — list every portable electrical appliance in the premises
  • Inform all staff about the visit date and what they should do with their personal equipment
  • Make all appliances accessible — move furniture, open storage rooms, check all areas
  • Include extension leads, power strips, and multi-way adapters — these are often forgotten
  • Flag any appliances with known issues or concerns for special attention
  • Arrange access to all locked rooms, storage areas, and restricted zones
  • Identify a staff member to accompany our engineer throughout the premises

On the Day

  • Ensure the designated contact person is available throughout the visit
  • Have keys and access codes ready for all areas
  • Let staff know which areas are being tested and when
  • Ask staff to log off but leave computers powered on where possible
  • Clear access routes between areas of the building

After the Visit

  • Review the test report — check for any failed appliances
  • Remove all failed appliances from service immediately
  • Arrange repair or replacement for failed items
  • File your certificate in your safety documentation folder
  • Add your next PAT test date to your business calendar
  • Share certificate copies with your insurer if required
