Hospitality businesses rely on a wide variety of electrical appliances — from commercial kitchen equipment and guest room TVs to bar refrigeration and laundry systems. The combination of constant public access, intensive commercial kitchen use, and the need for continuous operation makes electrical safety management particularly important.
What Needs PAT Testing in a Hotel?
- All guest room appliances (TVs, hair dryers, irons, kettles, lamps)
- Commercial kitchen equipment (ovens, fryers, mixers, slicers)
- Bar equipment (glass washers, refrigeration, cocktail equipment)
- Laundry and housekeeping equipment
- Conference and events AV equipment
- Reception and office equipment
- Leisure facility equipment (gym, spa)
- Cleaning and maintenance equipment
Scheduling to Minimise Disruption
Scheduling PAT testing in a hotel requires careful planning. Guest rooms can be tested floor by floor as rooms become vacant, or as a single block during a low-occupancy period. Kitchens are best tested before service or between meal periods. Bars can be tested before opening. We work closely with hotel management to build a testing schedule that causes minimal disruption to operations.
Commercial Kitchen Electrical Safety
Commercial kitchens are among the most electrically hazardous environments in the hospitality industry. High temperatures, water, grease, steam, and intensive use combine to degrade electrical equipment rapidly. Kitchen appliances should be PAT tested at least annually, with appliances showing heavy use or any signs of damage tested more frequently.
Holiday Lets and Short-Term Rentals
Holiday let landlords and short-term rental operators (including Airbnb hosts with multiple properties) have the same duty of care to guests as hotels. PAT testing is strongly recommended and is increasingly required by insurance policies for short-term rental properties. We can provide individual or portfolio-based testing services for holiday let operators.
