IT equipment is among the most common category of appliances found in commercial premises, and also among the most sensitive to incorrect handling during testing. Server rooms and data centres present particular challenges: the equipment is critical to business operations, the environment is carefully controlled, and downtime during testing must be minimised.
What IT Equipment Needs PAT Testing?
- Desktop computers and workstations
- Monitors and display screens
- Laptops and docking stations
- Printers, scanners, and multifunction devices
- Network switches and patch panels (if portable)
- UPS (uninterruptible power supply) units
- KVM switches and server management equipment
- Telephone systems and VOIP equipment
Server Room PAT Testing Considerations
Server rooms require a careful approach. Our engineers are briefed to minimise disruption — testing equipment where possible without disconnecting it, working methodically through the room, and flagging any concerns to the IT manager before taking any action. We never disconnect live server equipment without explicit approval from the customer.
Scheduling IT Equipment Testing
For businesses with critical IT infrastructure, scheduling testing during scheduled maintenance windows — or at least during off-peak hours — is advisable. Early morning or evening testing ensures that any temporary disconnection of non-critical equipment has minimal impact on business operations. We work with your IT team to develop a testing plan that fits within your maintenance windows.
IET Recommended Frequency for IT Equipment
The IET Code of Practice recommends testing IT equipment in low-risk environments such as offices every 4 years, with annual visual inspections. However, many businesses opt for annual testing across all equipment for simplicity. For IT equipment in higher-risk environments (dusty conditions, high humidity), more frequent testing may be appropriate.
