PAT Testing for Schools: Keeping Students Safe

Schools have a duty of care to protect students and staff from electrical hazards. Here's what headteachers and premises managers need to know about PAT testing in educational settings.

Schools contain a wide variety of electrical appliances — from computer suites and interactive whiteboards to science lab equipment, kitchen appliances, and music instruments. Managing the safety of all this equipment is a significant but essential responsibility for headteachers, premises managers, and school business managers.

Legal Framework for Schools

Schools are subject to the same health and safety legislation as other workplaces. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 imposes a duty of care on employers (governing bodies) and employees. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require all electrical equipment to be maintained in a safe condition. Schools also have specific duties under the Education (School Premises) Regulations 1999.

What Equipment Needs PAT Testing in Schools?

  • All computers, tablets, interactive whiteboards, and AV equipment
  • Science laboratory equipment (power packs, centrifuges, hot plates)
  • DT/woodwork department power tools
  • Home economics and kitchen appliances
  • Music equipment and amplifiers
  • Sports hall equipment with electrical components
  • Staff room and office appliances
  • Portable heaters and fans
  • Extension leads and multi-way adapters

Scheduling PAT Testing in Schools

The best time to carry out PAT testing in schools is during holiday periods — particularly summer or Christmas — when the building is less occupied and our engineers can access all areas without disrupting lessons. INSET days and early morning visits (before school begins) are also effective. We work with school calendars to find the most convenient time.

DBS Checks and School Security

All MES PAT Testing Ltd engineers working in school environments hold enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks. We carry photo ID and follow all school safeguarding policies. We're experienced in working within educational environments and understand the importance of security and appropriate conduct around students.

Ofsted and PAT Testing

Ofsted inspections assess the overall leadership and management of a school, which includes premises management and health and safety. While Ofsted inspectors don't specifically check PAT certificates, they consider whether the governing body and leadership team have effective systems for managing health and safety risks. Having current, documented PAT testing is part of demonstrating that standard.
